Pilanesberg and Sun City: The Perfect Safari and Resort Combination

The combination of Pilanesberg National Park and Sun City resort is unique in the African safari world. Nowhere else on the continent can you finish a dawn Big Five game drive, transfer forty minutes to a world-class resort complex, and spend the afternoon at a water park, golf course, or casino — and then return to the park the following morning for another drive. For mixed groups whose members have very different energy levels and interests, this combination solves the family safari’s most common logistical problem: what the non-wildlife enthusiasts do while the serious safari travellers are on their third game drive.

Sun City — What Is It?

Sun City is a resort complex in the North West Province, built in the 1970s and 1980s on the border of what would become Pilanesberg National Park. At its core are four hotels (The Palace of the Lost City, The Cascades, The Cabanas, and The Sun City Hotel), a casino, two championship golf courses (Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Course), a water park (Valley of Waves), entertainment venues, and retail facilities. It is the most comprehensive resort in southern Africa.

The Palace of the Lost City is the flagship: an extraordinary piece of themed architecture that replicates an ancient African palace in extraordinary detail, surrounded by the Roaring Lagoon beach and landscaped gardens. It is genuinely impressive in scale and execution, regardless of aesthetic preferences about themed resorts. For children particularly, The Palace produces a theatrical “destination” response that few African hotels can match.

How the Combination Works

Option 1: Split Stay

The simplest and most effective structure: two to three nights at a Pilanesberg private lodge for the safari component, then one to two nights at The Palace or Cascades for the resort component. Both are within forty minutes of each other by road. The safari component comes first — energy levels are higher at the beginning of a holiday and game drives require early mornings. The Sun City component is the decompression at the end.

Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge is the most practically positioned Pilanesberg lodge for this combination — it sits on the Sun City boundary and operates a shuttle service between the two properties. Guests can access Sun City’s facilities during the day and return to Kwa Maritane for the evening game drive and dinner.

Option 2: Base at Sun City, Day Trip to Pilanesberg

Guests staying at Sun City can self-drive to Pilanesberg for a day — the Bakgatla or Kwa Maritane gates are forty minutes from The Palace. This works for a single day’s wildlife experience as part of a primarily resort-based trip, but does not deliver the dawn and dusk game drive programme that a lodge stay produces. Appropriate for families where the resort is the primary destination and a single wildlife day is the add-on rather than the reverse.

Option 3: Guided Day Safari from Sun City

Several operators run full-day guided game drives from Sun City into Pilanesberg for resort guests who want a guided experience without booking a private lodge. These typically cover four to five hours in the park in an open vehicle with a qualified guide, include a midday refreshment stop, and return to Sun City by late afternoon. Less immersive than a lodge stay but practical for guests based at the resort.

Who This Combination Suits

The Pilanesberg-Sun City combination is best suited to:

  • Multi-generational families where grandparents, parents, and teenagers have different energy levels and interests. The safari satisfies the wildlife enthusiasts; Sun City satisfies the resort-seekers; no-one has to compromise their holiday entirely.
  • Corporate groups combining a bush retreat with resort facilities for evening entertainment.
  • Families with younger children who want wildlife encounters alongside the managed, predictable environment of a major resort — where a bad weather day or a fussy toddler does not compromise the entire trip.
  • Travellers with limited time who want both a safari and a resort experience without a domestic flight or a long overland transfer.
