How to Get to Pilanesberg National Park: Complete Travel Guide
Pilanesberg National Park is one of the most accessible major game reserves in South Africa. Located in the North West Province approximately 180 km northwest of Johannesburg, it is reachable by road in two and a half to three hours from OR Tambo International Airport — no domestic flight, no light aircraft transfer, no lengthy overland journey. For international travellers and domestic visitors alike, the logistics of getting to Pilanesberg are straightforwardly simple.
By Road from Johannesburg
The drive from Johannesburg to Pilanesberg follows well-maintained national highways throughout. The route:
- From OR Tambo or central Johannesburg, take the N14 highway heading west toward Krugersdorp, or use the N4 west toward Rustenburg.
- Continue on the N4 through Rustenburg (approximately 130 km from Johannesburg).
- From Rustenburg, take the R565 north toward Sun City and Pilanesberg (approximately 50 km).
- Follow signage to your specific gate: Bakgatla (most central), Manyane (northeast), Kwa Maritane (adjacent to Sun City), or Mogwase (northwest).
Distance: Approximately 180 km from central Johannesburg to Bakgatla Gate.
Drive time: 2.5–3 hours in normal traffic conditions. Allow additional time for Johannesburg rush hour traffic (07:00–09:00 and 16:00–18:30).
A standard rental car is adequate for all Pilanesberg access roads. No 4×4 is required. The R565 and all access roads to the park gates are tar-surfaced and accessible year-round.
By Road from Pretoria
Pretoria is slightly closer than Johannesburg: approximately 160 km via the N4 west directly to Rustenburg, then R565 north. Drive time: 2–2.5 hours.
Domestic Flights — Is a Flight Necessary?
No domestic flight is required or recommended for Pilanesberg. Johannesburg’s road connection makes the drive the most practical option. The nearest commercial airport to Pilanesberg is OR Tambo (Johannesburg) — from which the drive is 2.5–3 hours — or Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (Gaborone, Botswana), which serves no useful purpose for Pilanesberg-bound travellers.
The only scenario where a domestic flight makes sense is if you are arriving at Cape Town or Durban and want to visit Pilanesberg without routing through Johannesburg — in which case a Cape Town–Johannesburg (1h45) or Durban–Johannesburg (1h) domestic flight connects to the Pilanesberg road transfer.
Transfers from OR Tambo
If you prefer not to self-drive, private transfer services operate between OR Tambo International Airport and Pilanesberg’s private lodges. Transfer time is approximately three hours. Most Pilanesberg lodges can arrange or recommend a transfer service at the time of booking — confirm at least one week ahead for guaranteed availability.
Shared shuttle services also operate from Johannesburg and Pretoria to the Sun City complex (adjacent to Pilanesberg); if staying at Sun City and planning to access Pilanesberg as a day trip, these shuttles are the most cost-effective transport option.
GPS Coordinates by Gate
- Bakgatla Gate: 25°14’53″S, 27°00’54″E — Central and most commonly used.
- Manyane Gate: 25°10’35″S, 27°05’37″E — Northeast, nearest to the N4 from Pretoria.
- Mogwase Gate: 25°10’12″S, 26°58’43″E — Northwest, quietest gate.
- Kwa Maritane Gate: 25°21’07″S, 27°05’52″E — South, adjacent to Sun City. Use this gate if staying at Kwa Maritane or Bakubung lodges.
Enter your lodge’s specific coordinates rather than the generic park name into GPS navigation — lodge entrance roads are not always accurately represented in mapping applications.
Fuel and Practical Stops
Fill up in Rustenburg before entering the reserve. There is no fuel available inside the park. Rustenburg has multiple filling stations on the N4 and the R565 approach road. Sun City has fuel available at its petrol station, accessible to day visitors before entering the park from the southern gate.
